Freshman Art History
(Class meets Tuesday and Thursday)
History of Self -Portrait
Objectives: Throughout
the eight-week quarter students will learn about portrait art and the history of self-portrait. The students complete these objectives with following schedule-
- Complete pre-instructional self portrait
- This will be completed in first two class sessions.
- Observe and study various portrait Artists within a historical context.
- This segment will include power point slide presentations with lecture, reading assignments and
gallery visit. Students will write one page reflection on gallery visit. There will be a 25-question objective and short answer exam at the conclusion of this
three-week segment.
- Research and compose written and power point presentation based on portrait artist.
- Students will meet in IMC (Information Media Center) for research and inquiry guidelines for
three-week segment culminating with presentations to class.
- Participate in portrait instruction and complete second self-portrait.
- Final week of course will involve drawing instruction and completion of final self-portrait.

Procedures: Initial class
segment will be a meet and greet format where objectives and expectations are presented to students. Following class will involve pre-instructional drawing for reference to final portrait project. Students will be exposed to historical art examples relevant to class objectives and discuss styles, techniques
and medium used. A gallery visit to local museum will give students first hand
examples of actual works of art. An exam will assess the comprehension of material covered in lectures and observations. Students will research and construct a power point presentation for classmates. Students will be instructed in portrait techniques following Betty Edwards text and
examples prior to completing final self-portrait drawing.
This lesson will plan will
give students a brief understanding of the importance of historical research while applying this knowledge to contemporary
problem solving. Students will comprehend the importance of building upon prior
experiences for the success of final projects and research.

7th Grade
(Class Meets Monday Friday)
Art and Artists
Objectives: Students will
use Art and Artists as a theme to increase knowledge of the arts while advancing their reading and comprehension skills. Throughout the nine-week course students will research an artist from any of the art
disciplines (visual, music and theatrical) every two weeks, reading at least one text resource and writing a one-page reflection
about the subject.
Materials: Internet search
engines and Library catalogue.
Procedures: Class sessions
will begin with brief discussion and instruction on research techniques along with a question and answer time for reflective
writing assignments.
This lesson plan will be
a student-centered course that will give students the empowerment to follow personal
interests and reading strengths. The writing assignments will also give students
and educators forum for assessment of reading comprehension.
